A
good race is really subjective. Most people want to see three
leaders shuffling back and forth with one to emerge just inches
ahead of another rider as they cartwheel over the finish line.
A race where someone leads from the get go and never looks
back, just doesn't offer the same drama. From Alba's point
of view, however, the Douglas
Wheel Dirt Days of Summer proved to be
a great race. Kory Ellis rode like he was possessed and literally
drove away from the field - in both motos. Even some of the
other pros that were competing were in awe of how extremely
fast Kory was, and commented that there was no catching him.
The Lake Elsinore
Motocross ATV track was well suited to Kory's riding style,
and after a day of practice he had it wired. Of course, it
didn't hurt that he help degisn the track! There was a good
amount of jumps, doubles, table tops - but not a lot of tight,
supercross style peaks - that make for a good show, but don't
really make for good racing. The track also offered a lot
of good, fast corners.
Kory killed it on the jumps.
In fact, in the back side of the track, Kory was the only
rider all day to launch over the step-up double - distancing
himself from the pack each lap.
ATV racing legend Doug Eichner
commented on the track,
"At first I didn't think
the track was going to be that good, but there were really
a lot of opportunities to pass. This track made for great
racing."
Ellis's
Team Alba Racing teammate Steve Beilman made this observation,
"The track was good sized,
not small and tight like the ITP supercross tracks. This track
was really dialed in for quad racing."
Kory even did well on his
start, even getting the hole shot in moto 2 - which he's been
having a bit of a problem with all year.
After the race, Kory said
goodbye to his Team Alba Racing YFZ 450 Stroker #001 - which
was sold to a customer up near Sacramento, who drove all the
way to Elsinore to retrieve it. Anyone can build a race quad,
but this one was actually raced by Team Alba's Kory Ellis
and it Won the last race it was in. I guess that way you are
assured of getting a fast machine!
This is the first in a 3-part
mini-series presented by Douglas Wheels. The next race will
be June 12th.
