In the quad portion
of the four-day McMillin Nevada 1000, the Alba Action
Sports sponsored team of Wayne Matlock
and Chad Prull were finally able to get back
on track. They nailed down the overall quad win. With the
Nevada 1000 win, Matlock and Prull have been reinvigorated
on retaining the valued #1 plate they captured last year.
They now find themselves with a total of 212 points, only
four points behind the current Quad Pro point leaders Jimmy
Stephensen and Greg Stuart.
Just behind the top
two point leaders and knocking on the door are two other teams
within striking distance. Josh Frederick
and Cyle Chislock are now third in points
race and tied with Greg Row and Anthony
Baker at 209 points.
Josh Frederick was
the first quad to start the 220-mile first stage and Chad
Prull was second off the line. Three miles into the
race, Greg Row ran into problems when the master link on his
chain broke. Things got worse for Row when he didn’t
have an extra master link with him and had to be towed to
the pit, losing valuable time.
As the two front-runners,
Frederick and Prull, reached pit two. Prull
had managed to close the gap on Frederick by five seconds.
Both riders pulled into pit two with rear flats. Also, Nic
Granlund had a lengthy pit stop, changing rear brakes, at
pit two after he lost his brakes at the start.
During the stop at pit two, the riders changed their mounts.
Wayne Matlock took the controls from Chad
Prull and Fredericks changed with Cyle Chislock.
Chislock and Matlock screamed out of pit two racing each other
for pit holeshot. It was Chislock who grabbed the pit-shot
and plowed the way.
Just after pit three, Matlock was able to get around Chislock
for lead. Once Matlock had the lead he was out-front to stay.
Except
for the flat tire and the bushes that were getting stuck in
their radiator, Matlock and Prull had a very good day. They
finished day one with the lead and posted a 4:46:07 time.
Giving them a over a two-minute lead on second place finisher’s
Jimmy Stephensen and Greg Stuart. Josh Frederick and Cycle
Chislock grabbed third crossing two minutes after Stephensen.
As the racers remounted
their bikes for the 330 mile second stage. Wayne Matlock
was the first racer to lay tracks in the sand with Greg Stuart
in tow. At pit two, Matlock’s lead was only fifteen
seconds on Stuart when he handed Prull the bike. By pit four
they led by six minutes on physical time, but on adjusted
time it was two minutes, over the second place team of Stuart
and Stephensen. Chislock was making a run on Stehensen as
the race for second tightened. Meanwhile Matlock was out front
cruising in clean air
Matlock pulled into pit 6 for a rider change. Prull
took over the controls, as Chislock and Stephensen were entering
pit 6. The race for second was really close, so it was a quick
gas and go for both Chislock and Stephensen. They were both
back out on the course within 30 seconds, chasing Prull.
Just after pit 6, Chislock and Stephensen crashed into each
other opening the door for the White/Strunk team to grab second.
Stephensen was dinged
pretty good and was taken to the hospital, with a possible
concussion. Chislock was ok but his bike had a smashed radiator
and bent bars. Meanwhile, Matlock was on his way to another
first place finish and cruised to the finish line with a 4
minute lead.
The top five results
for day two were Matlock and Prull in first. Allen White and
Shane Strunk finished in second. Quad Expert racer’s
Gregory Price and brothers Mitch and Kevin Canepa grabbed
third. Stephensen and Stuart were fourth. Jeff Hancock and
Joshua Edwards placed fifth.
Day two ended up taking it’s toll on a bunch of competitor’s.
There were 13 quads that withdrew from the stage and two that
were totally out of the event. Also, the Row/Baker team were
hit with a two-hour penalty for a dnf, due to mechanical difficulties.
After all of the dust settled from the afternoon’s racing,
the team of Frederick and Chislock were assessed a 15 minute
time penalty. They spent more than the allotted time of 1
hour , while making repair’s on their bike. Since Matlock
and Prull won the second stage they were the first quad to
blaze the 300 plus mile third stage. On board the Yellow Alba
machine was Chad Prull leading the field. At pit two Prull
handed the bike off to Matlock.
Fast forwarding ahead
to the halfway mark of the third stage. Allen White was bearing
down on Matlock near pit five with Stuart and Frederick behind
him. Matlock pulls into pit five first and his bike is running
hot. The heat is starting to toast the rings. So they refill
the radiator, which was almost dry, and add a quart of oil.
Matlock looks up and notices Allen White streaking down the
mountain like a meteor. It was time to put down the tools,
button up the bike and put the peddle to metal. Which Matlock
did in quick-time.
White cruises into pit 5 for a quick gas and go. Then he’s
back out on the course and rolls the throttle. He closes to
within thirty seconds of Matlock. But Matlock was able to
stay ahead of White and actually put about a minute on him,
as they approached the final pit stop.
Matlock pulls in for
his final pit stop and after hearing the bike the pit crew
decides to change the filter. Matlock could sense that White
was bearing down on him. So, while he’s messing with
the filter, he looks up and here comes White with a full head
of steam. Matlock’s pit crew immediately decides to
scrap the filter change and make tracks for the course.
White pulls in for his final pit and everything goes fine
and wham-bam he’s back on the course chasing Matlock
once again.

Matlock is out front
blazing the trail but now he’s in three feet high weeds
and can’t see what’s on the ground below. He’s
now cruising pretty good, in third gear, and
all of a sudden there’s a two foot tall boulder and
bam! he hit’s it and goes
over the bar’s hard. He dazed and has the wind knocked
out of him from violently hitting the ground. Allen White
shows up, stops and gets off his bike to make sure Matlock
is ok. Matlock is lucent and hand signals to White he’s
ok. Allen stays. Matlock hand signals he’s ok, one more
time. Allen is still staying and won’t leave. Matlock
finally gets the words out that he’s ok and tells Allen
to go. Then Allen reluctantly remounts his bike and hit’s
the course. A few moments later Matlock gets up, shakes it
off and remounts his bike.
Towards the finish
line, Matlock is about ten yards off White’s bumper,
with Stuart closing. But he just runs out of course to reel
White in. White crosses the finish line first followed by
Matlock and Stuart, rounding out the top three. The final
finishing order for the third stage Pro class was Stuart,
who rode just about all of the stage solo in first. Stuart
beat White on adjusted time by six seconds. White and Strunk
officially finish in second. Josh Frederick and Cyle Chislock
edged out Matlock on adjusted time and grabbed third. Matlock
finished in fourth. Hancock and Edwards grab fifth.
Honorable mention goes
out to the Expert racing class team of Greg Price, Mitch Canepa
and Kevin Canepa who crossed in fourth ahead of Matlock but
were not counted among the Pro class finishers.
The final stage was the 119 mile sprint to the finish. The
team of Shaun Moore and Nic Granlund started sixth off the
line and put together a flawless ride grabbing the top spot.
Josh Fredericks and Cyle Chislock had no problems and took
the second spot . Allen White and Shane Strunk grabbed third.
Capturing the fourth spot was the team of Wayne Matlock and
Chad Prull who ran the final stage very cautiously. They already
had a fifteen minute overall lead on the field before they
started the fourth stage. But, they were still burning oil
and just wanted to get their bike across the finish line in
the top five.
During the final stage they burned through two quarts of oil
and kept their bike running despite fried rings. Rounding
out the top five Pro class finisher’s were Jimmy Stephensen
and Greg Stuart who place fifth.
When all the top five
Pro class team times were added up, Wayne Matlock
and Chad Prull earned a long hard fought
victory, grabbing the overall quad win. Matlock
and Prull posted an overall wining time of 21:21:18. Shane
Strunk and Allen White grabbed second overall with a total
combined time of 21:34:59. Rounding out third place on the
podium was Jimmy Stephensen and Greg Stuart who had a total
time of 21:39:19. Josh Frederick and Cyle Chislock took the
fourth spot with a total time of 22:30:33. Shaun Moore and
Nic Granlund grabbed fifth overall with a total time of 26:42:50.
Kudos also go out to the Quad Expert team of Greg Price, Mitch
Canepa and Kevin Canepa who finished first in class and third
overall in the standings with a total time of 21:36:27.
