Jeremy Schell Takes Second on First Race Back After His Injury

MAR 13, 2005
ITP Quadcross
Racetown, Adalanto, CA

Jeremy Schell answered some tough questions of himself this weekend at the first running of the ITP ATV Championship in Adelanto, CA. After breaking his ankle at a recent indoor ATV Supercross, questions like, "will my ankle hold up?" and "can I still win?" must have been swirling around his head in the days leading up to the race. The answer to both turned out to be a resounding "yes," as the returning ITP Quadcross champion returned to racing with a first moto win and a strong second overall for the day. The SoCal Hick is back, ladies and gentlemen, and he is looking for his 3rd straight ITP title! Here's what he had to say about the weekend:

Jeremy Schell Interview, 3/15/05
By Geoff Walters

So Jeremy, what are you doing right now?
I'm watching a little TV and getting ready to go to the gym.

There was an ITP race this weekend; how did you do?
I won the first moto and took second in the second. I got 2nd overall.

Where was the race?
At Racetown, in Adelanto.

Do they still have that enormous stepup in the back?
Yes, it's still there.

Do you guys on quads clear it?
Well, some guys do! I didn't do it this weekend because of my ankle. I didn't want to come up short and ruin it for the season.

That's a good decision. Speaking of the season, where are you in the points right now?
This weekend was the first round of the ITP series, so I'm in 2nd place right now.

Tell us about the first moto.
I got the holeshot, with Dustin [Nelson] right behind me. I basically had the lead from start to finish.

A wire to wire win!
Yeah.

What happened in the second moto?
Dana [Creech] got the holeshot with me in 2nd, and after a little while we both checked out a little. I was able to hold onto him for a few laps, but he started to pull away on about the 4th lap. I haven't had enough seat time since the injury, I think.

So with a little more practice, you'll be in the hunt?
Yes, definitely. Because of my ankle, I haven't been able to burn motos like I want to; I've only even been riding for the last couple of weeks. Now I need to get back in shape and up to speed.

Speaking of conditioning, how close to normal would you say your strength was this weekend?
I was about 60%

That's good news, if you took 2nd!
Yeah, coming off an injury, not too bad.

How rough was the track?
Not bad. The track got a little hard, kinda blue-groove, but the bumps weren't too bad. It sure wasn't like Glen Helen or anything!

Speaking of Glen Helen, when is your next race there?
The second round of ITP is there, on April 3rd. I've got Thunder in the Valley at racetown coming up, and then Glen Helen.

Hopefully you'll be ready by round 3.
Hopefully! I'll be riding Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday so hopefully I'll be ready.

What do you do to workout and get in shape? I'm sure lots of ATV racers would like to know.
I usually do about 25 minutes of running on the treadmill, and then 25 minutes on the exercise bike. Right now I'm doing a little more weightlifting and full-body workouts.

Do you mix it up at different points in the season?
Yeah, I hit the gym for a while, and then I like to ride my mountain bike when I can. As soon as I can run again, I'll do that.

Well, hopefully with a program like that, you'll take it to them next time around!
Yeah, definitely, that's what I'm hoping to do!

Hey, I'll let you get to the gym so you can start your workout. Talk to you soon!
