“Why Suspension
Service Is So Important”
- Oil in your shocks is similar to the oil
in your car. There is a moving piston, which causes oil
breakdown. The oil breakdown causes a fade sensation in
the shock and therefore an oil change is necessary.
- Oil in your shock is also sensitive to the
constant heating and cooling that it goes through. This
heating and cooling of your shock also causes breakdown
in the oil.
- Although your shock piston does not have
rings it does have a piston band which wears similar to
the piston rings in your motorcycle. With the wearing of
the band you will have a loss in dampening which can cause
heavy wear on your bumper and internal shock body
- Shock bumper is very important to have in
good condition. The use of the bumper helps the shock from
bottoming out and the shock going metal to metal. With a
bumper non existent it could cause heavy wear on the shock
that is not necessary, this wear can cause you to have to
purchase a new shock
- The seal in your shock is very sensitive;
with constant abrasives on the shock shaft traveling up
and down the seal takes a heavy beating.
- Covering the shock shaft is important due
to the pitting of the shaft (if you follow people when you
ride) the shaft has to keep a constant seal from the outside
of the shock to the inside, therefore keeping the shaft
as clean as possible is a wise idea
- Extensive wear on the shock and on the oil
can cause serious damage to your complete shock. This is
why service is so important and cannot be overlooked. The
cost of a service is fairly inexpensive compared to the
cost of a new shock.
